Free HIV Testing

Status is everything! Metro provides free HIV testing to our community. Our certified HIV testers offer two types of testing:

  • Blood-based
    • Blood-based testing is completed by drawing a blood sample and sending it to the lab, results provided within 3 days, is considered the best testing available.
  • OraSure
    • The Orasure test is an oral swab that is sent to the Health Deptartment for testing. Results come back in 2-3 weeks.
  • Clearview
    • Clearview testing is a simple finger prick test and results are available in 15 minutes.

Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP)

        • For those HIV negative clients who are at high-risk for HIV infection, despite best efforts at risk reduction. This may include clients who have partners with HIV.
        • PrEP medication (Truvada) is a once-a-day anti-HIV pill with minimal side effects
        • When taken consistently, PrEP has been shown to reduce the risk of HIV infection in people who are at high risk by up to 92%. PrEP is a powerful HIV prevention tool and can be combined with condoms and other prevention methods to provide even greater protection than when used alone.
        • Our PrEP program includes:
          • Thorough HIV risk assessment and personalized recommendations for reduction of exposure
          • Complete laboratory studies at baseline and every three months
          • Routine physician visits at baseline and every 3 months
          • STD screening at each visit as needed
          • Your prescription for PrEP medication can be filled at the time of your doctor visit at our on site pharmacy
          • Appointments are available at both our St. Petersburg and Ybor sites, during week day and some evening hours. We have easily accessible free parking.
          • We provide on-site lab draws. Laboratory studies are covered by most insurances; self-pay options are available.

Post-exposure Prophylaxis, Non-occupational (nPEP)

          • Evaluation and rapid treatment by our physician for HIV-negative clients with a high-risk HIV exposure in the past 72 hrs.
          • Appointments usually available the same or next day at either our St. Petersburg or Ybor locations. Starting nPEP medications as soon as possible after exposure is crucial.
          • Testing at baseline, 1 month and later if indicated.
          • STD screening at each visit as needed.
          • Prescription for nPEP medications sent to your local pharmacy for filling through your health insurance plan.
