Gay Youth Suicide is an Epidemic
Metro Wellness and Community Centers Offer Free Therapy to Gay and Lesbian Youth

Gay and lesbian youth are three to four times more likely to attempt suicide than heterosexual youth, because they are picked on and targeted for harassment and violence. In the past month, the media has reported on four teenagers from across America who have taken their own lives, after being harassed and bullied. Countless others suffer in silence, according to a recent study by Campus Pride.

“Being young is hard enough, but being young and gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgendered can make life feel unbearable,” says Andrew Schmidt of Metro Wellness and Community Centers. Metro, with offices in Tampa and St. Petersburg, will be offering free therapy to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered youth who are being harassed, bullied or teased. “These youth need to know that they are not alone, and that life can get better,” says Schmidt, Metro’s Director of Behavioral Health. “Therapy will help support them through this time.” To learn more or to schedule an appointment in either county, call Schmidt at 727-321-3854. The public is asked to please spread the word.
