United States

In recent years, new treatments have slowed the progression from HIV to AIDS and from AIDS to death in people infected with HIV in the United States. As a result, the U.S. rates of new AIDS cases and AIDS deaths have dropped dramatically.  The cumulative estimated number of cases of AIDS through 2006 in the United States and dependent areas was 1,014,797.  Increasing proportions of new infections have been among women, certain ethnic minority populations, and people infected through heterosexual contact. Worldwide

In 2007 33.2 million people were estimated to be living with HIV, 2.5 million people became newly infected and 2.1 million people died of AIDS.
