HIV/AIDS Treatment

What is HAART?

HAART stands for “Highly Active Antiretroviral Therapy,” a common type of HIV treatment which includes at least one protease inhibitor and usually two other antiretroviral drugs. Since its introduction in 1996, HAART has been shown to be extremely effective in slowing HIV progression. HAART does have drawbacks, however. Some patients find it difficult to take numerous pills every day at strictly scheduled times, and many experience serious side effects from the drug combinations.
