Minorities Living with HIV

Minority Education & Treatment (M.E.T.) Program

Funded though the Minority AIDS Initiative, the Minority Education & Treatment (M.E.T.) Program at Metro is designed to increase medical and medication adherence among African Americans and Hispanics living with HIV/AIDS.  Studies have shown that minorities are at increased risk for advanced disease progression due to barriers such as: low literacy, language barriers, socioeconomic status, and other cultural difference.

Through the MET program, Metro Wellness and Community Centers empowers and educates participants on how to communicate effectively with their medical providers, become more proactive with their medical care and medication treatment plan, and eventually become mentors to others who may be experiencing similar barriers.  The M.E.T. participants also receive supportive services such as translation and interpretation, transportation to medical appointments, monthly support groups, and peer support to help them achieve their adherence goals.

By reducing the barriers to healthcare and providing supportive services, we have provided a medium for many of our clients have experienced successful increases in their CD4 (T-cell) counts and undetectable viral loads. Program participants also assist in organizing topics for monthly newsletters, attending health fairs, and providing information and education at other local events.

The Minority Education & Treatment (M.E.T.) Program is currently offered at all of the Metro Wellness and Community Centers office locations.
