Our Staff
David W. Lyter, MD, MPH
David W. Lyter, MD, MPH, joins Metro in July 2015 as its Medical Director and first full-time primary care physician. Dr. Lyter received his MD degree and Masters of Public Health (MPH) in Infectious Disease and Microbiology at the University of Pittsburgh.  He completed his residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in hematology/medical oncology in Pittsburgh as well.  In 1984 he was a cofounder and Medical Director of the Pitt Men’s Study, a long-term study of HIV and its risk factors in group of over 2000 gay or bisexual men.  This study still continues to this day.   Following completion if his education, Dr. Lyter moved to Chicago, where he developed a university-based HIV cancer program.  With the advent of potent anti-retro-virals in the mid 1990’s, the rate of new cancers in persons with HIV dropped dramatically, prompting Dr. Lyter return to his primary care interests.  He had a very successful internal medicine/HIV practice for the LGBT community in Wilton Manors/Ft. Lauderdale.  He has also worked as a hospice physician in Tampa and as a primary care provider for both the Hillsborough and Manatee County Sheriffs’ Offices.   Dr. Lyter, a native of south central Pennsylvania, is a resident of Riverview, where he lives with his three basenjis.  He enjoys photography, landscaping, nature, kayaking, international travel and, of course, the Steelers.
Corinne “Corie” Beniasians, PA-C, MS-PA
Corinne “Corie” Beniasians, PA-C, MS-PA is our newest medical clinician.

Corie is an avid Disney fan, born and raised in Southern California, who grew up on Disney movies and going to Disneyland, so she’s “still a big kid at heart”.

She earned her degrees in NYC and attended and graduated from an Accredited Physician Assistant Program at Pace University, graduating amongst the top of her class, and earning a Magna Cum Laude Latin honors award.  Her interest in HIV prevention and AIDS awareness began with organizations like Body Positive – an HIV outreach, support, and education company, Pajama Program which worked with at-risk youth to prevent drug use and educate regarding STD and HIV prevention. Upon graduation, Corie worked in several medical specialties, including Internal/Family Medicine, Urgent Care, Occupational Medicine, Rheumatology and most recently STI Management and Prevention, and HIV prevention.

Corie worked for the LA LGBT Center for 5 years, starting off as a per-diem SHeP provider, treating and managing STIs, in addition to providing PEP to those who qualify.  Due to her extensive background in Research studies, she took the UCLA Path-PrEP Clinical Research Study Provider position, and was involved in the study for over 3 years. During this time she also completed her Master’s degree, writing her thesis on the topic of efficacy of PrEP in the MSM population.  Currently, she is involved in a publication regarding the increased STI rates among PrEP users.

In her last position, she was the Lead Clinician of the satellite clinic for the LA LGBT Center in West Hollywood, continuing her work in providing PrEP and PEP services and providing STI management and treatment.

Corie explains that “My life and career opportunities have brought me to Florida where I plan to continue my work in the LGBT community in providing the utmost, most compassionate and efficient care I can at Metro Health and Wellness Community Centers.”

Chicky Desmarais, ARNP
Chicky Desmarais, PMHNP-BC (Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner, Board Certified) joins Metro as our new psychiatric nurse practitioner after working over sixteen years in the PTSD program at Bay Pines VA Medical Center.  She completed both her undergraduate and graduate degrees at the University of South Florida and has over thirty years of nursing experience.  Chicky began her career working on a hospital medical-surgical unit on a floor that was treating patients who were being newly diagnosed with HIV in the 1980s and her interest in HIV/AIDS led her to also become a volunteer with the Escambia County Health Department providing support and respite care for HIV+ individuals and their families.   After five years of dedication to this patient population, Chicky changed her focus to mental health and has been working in this field, first as an RN and after completing her graduate degree, as an ARNP.  She has held her ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health National Certification for over twenty years. She has worked in inpatient and outpatient psychiatric units as well as specializing in the treatment of PTSD for clients with combat and sexual trauma in both outpatient and residential care settings.  She is qualified to deliver a number of evidence based therapies  in both group and individual settings in addition to medication management.   Chicky has been a leader as a community activist for a number of causes including women’s equality, LGBT issues, reproductive rights and women’s health issues. She served on the board of the Sonia Plotnick Health Fund for sixteen years, including three years as president.
