METRO Announces SAGE Tampa Bay
– METRO is proud to announce the launch of SAGE Tampa Bay. SAGE has been the leading force of support and advocacy in the LGBT aging field since its founding in 1978. SAGE is the “safety net” for LGBT older adults, providing critical services to a traditionally underserved population for whom the challenges of aging are often compounded by marginalization and discrimination.
METRO staff worked diligently to gauge the needs of the community and pursue this affiliation and joins SAGE Metro Detroit as the 28th and 29th SAGE affiliates nationwide. “We are excited to work with other SAGE Affiliates across the nation to better serve our community,” says Lorraine Langlois, CEO of METRO. “This designation propels our services on a national scale.” The organization hopes that SAGE Affiliation will help launch additional program opportunities and funding options for our area.
For the past several years, METRO has already been offering a variety of social and health services to the LGBT older adult community through its LGBT Centers in both St. Petersburg and Tampa. The organization offers weekly support and social groups for mature men, monthly outings and social events for women, free legal advice, counseling services, chair yoga, regular speakers, a Friendly Visitor Program, Primary Care services and much more.
As America’s overall older population is experiencing unprecedented growth with the aging of the “Baby Boomer” generation, there are an estimated 1.6 million LGBT older adults today – a number expected to double by 2030. Today’s LGBT “Baby Boomers” are the first generation to have lived openly gay or transgender lives in large numbers. “We will make a difference in the lives of every LGBT older person in every community in this country,” says Michael Adams, Executive Director of SAGE.
The official launch event will be held on Thursday, December 3, 2015 at the St. Pete METRO LGBT Center, located at 3251 3rd Avenue North. The event will start at 10:30 a.m. with free brunch provided for attendees. The keynote address will be “The History of SAGE” with Chris Almvig, co-founder of SAGE National. Other guests and an official unveiling of the SAGE Tampa Bay logo will take place.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to win one of two raffle items:
2 Tickets to see Kristin Chenoweth at Ruth Eckerd Hall on February 26th
or 2 Tickets to see Suzanne Westenhoefer at the Palladium on December 13th.
