Black & Empowered: Education - Watching The Great Debaters

Black & Empowered: Education

On May 26th from 7-9PM at Metro Inclusive Health in St. Pete, please join us for another installment of the Black & Empowered series at Metro Inclusive Health, sponsored by Trulieve!

Our theme for May is “Education,” in recognition of the anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education ruling (May 17, 1954)  that “in the field of public education the doctrine of ‘separate but equal’ has no place,” as segregated schools are “inherently unequal.”

Join us for a private screening of the movie The Great Debaters (2007)! Directed by Denzel Washington, it’s based on the true story of a professor who in 1935 formed the first student debate team at Wiley College, one of the oldest predominantly Black colleges west of the Mississippi River. This team went on to make history when it challenged Harvard in the national championship. This criminally under-told story is something the entire family can and should enjoy. Jurnee Smollett-Bell, Nate Parker, and Denzel Whitaker will leave you inspired. By the end of the movie, you’ll be giving them a standing ovation.

COVID Safety Update: Facial masks and social distancing required. This will be held in our Grand Hall.
