nPEP can Prevent HIV After an Exposure

What is nPEP for HIV Prevention?

A short-term treatment, nPEP (Post Exposure Prophylaxis) can prevent HIV if taken within 72 hours of exposure to HIV. Contact us at 727-321-3854 or visit any Tampa Bay health center for prompt assistance.

DoxyPEP & STI Testing

DoxyPEP Can Prevent Common STIs After Exposure

DoxyPEP significantly lowers the risk of contracting bacterial STIs like syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea following unprotected sex. Note that DoxyPEP does not prevent HIV, Mpox, or other viral infections. For comprehensive protection, PrEP and DoxyPEP can be combined.

Complete Same-Day STI Testing for Peace of Mind

Each prescription is accompanied by thorough STI testing. Book online for same-day results available at our Seminole Heights and North St. Pete locations. Rapid HIV and Hep C testing is always free at all health centers.

PrEP, DoxyPEP, nPEP FAQs

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) FAQs

The cost of PrEP can vary depending on your insurance coverage, but many patients can access PrEP for free or at a low cost through insurance plans, co-pay assistance, or patient assistance programs. Contact us to learn more about your options and to see if you qualify for affordable PrEP.

We accept most major insurances, Medicare, and Medicaid. We provide patient assistance to those without insurance. Most patients pay little to nothing out of pocket.

Regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, PrEP is for anyone that’s sexually active and could be exposed to HIV, including those in committed relationships. Learn more here.

With Truvada and now Descovy, you have more options. Talk to our PrEP Navigators for more info.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis (nPEP) FAQs

nPEP is the use of antiretroviral medication to prevent HIV transmission in isolated exposures to blood, genital secretions, and other potentially infectious body fluids that may contain HIV.

It is a treatment for individuals potentially exposed to HIV outside the workplace, such as during episodes of unprotected sex, needle-sharing, or exposure to blood or body fluids of a person with HIV.

nPEP should be started as soon as possible, ideally within 72 hours after potential HIV exposure. The sooner nPEP is taken, the more effective it is at preventing HIV infection.

The total nPEP treatment duration is 28 days. It should not be administered for less than 28 days unless the source is determined to be uninfected via confirmatory HIV test or there are intolerable side effects with no alternative medications available.

The most common side effects of nPEP are nausea, gastrointestinal upset, and fatigue.

Prophylactic antiemetic and antidiarrheal agents can be used to control these side effects.

Doxycycline (DoxyPEP) FAQs

DoxyPEP is a post-exposure preventative treatment for bacterial STIs, specifically syphilis and chlamydia, and to a lesser extent, gonorrhea. It involves taking doxycycline, an antibiotic, after condomless sexual encounters to reduce the risk of contracting these infections.

Take 200 mg (2 tablets) of doxycycline within 24 hours, but no later than 72 hours, after condomless sexual activity. It should be taken with a full glass of water, and you should remain upright for 30 minutes after taking it. Do not take more than 200 mg in a 24-hour period.

The most common side effects include gastrointestinal issues like diarrhea, vomiting, and nausea. Photosensitivity is also common, making your skin more sensitive to sunlight. Rarely, more serious side effects can occur, such as allergic reactions or increased pressure in the brain.

DoxyPEP is currently recommended for adult gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women who have a history of STIs within the last 12 months. However, healthcare providers may prescribe it to others based on perceived risk.

Doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is not recommended for:

  1. Cisgender Women: Insufficient trial data for this group.
  2. Children Under 12: Recommended only for those 12 years and older.
  3. Individuals Without Recent STI Diagnosis: Not suitable for those without a bacterial STI diagnosis in the past 12 months or who have not engaged in high-risk sexual activities.
  4. Allergic Individuals: Those with a known allergy to doxycycline or severe side effects from it.

Consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice.

Yeztugo (Injectable PrEP) FAQs

Yeztugo is a long-acting FDA-approved HIV prevention medication. Unlike daily PrEP pills, this option is given as an injection just once every 6 months.

  • Administered under the skin of the abdomen by a METRO provider in one of our Tampa Bay area clinics.
  • At initiation, you’ll also take a short course of oral pills alongside your first injection to ensure protective medication levels.
  • No daily pill is required after the first dose.
  • Schedule a visit at any METRO location in Tampa, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, New Port Richey, or Brandon.
  • Complete labs for HIV, STIs, kidney and liver function, and Hepatitis B.
  • Receive your first injection in-clinic; follow-up doses every 6 months include repeat testing.
  • Adults and adolescents (16+ with parental consent) at risk of HIV exposure, including individuals assigned female at birth.
  • Must test HIV-negative before starting.
  • Medicare covers Yeztugo now with no cost to the patient.
  • Most private insurers and Medicaid plans in the Tampa Bay region are expected to follow.
  • METRO will confirm your coverage and contact you when you’re ready to start.
  • Common: Injection site redness, swelling, pain, bumps; nausea, headache, fatigue.
  • Rare but serious: Possible HIV resistance if doses are missed or delayed and HIV is contracted during the “tail period” when drug levels decline.
  • Still new for prevention use—long-term real-world data is limited.
  • Injections must be given on time every 6 months.
  • If missed, you may need to restart labs or transition to oral PrEP before your next injection.

Yes—you can move between daily oral PrEP and injectable PrEP with guidance from your provider.

No. Yeztugo only prevents HIV. Regular STI testing and safer sex practices are still recommended.

Daily PrEP is taken as one pill each day, making it easy to start or stop and ideal for those who thrive on routines. It’s covered by most insurances and, in many cases, can be started the same day. Long-acting PrEP is given as an injection every six months, requiring clinic visits and testing, and is a great option for those who often forget daily pills. While coverage for the injection is still expanding, it typically begins after your initial testing and clinic visit.

  • Join our waitlist and fast-track yourself to long-acting PrEP as soon as your insurance coverage is available.
  • Book a PrEP consultation online or call METRO at 727-321-3854.
  • Already on PrEP? Ask about switching to Yeztugo.
  • Fill your prescriptions at Metro Inclusive Pharmacy or a Copay It Forward™ partner pharmacy to help fund care for uninsured patients—at no extra cost to you.
