Oliver Mintz found the perfect summer camp. There’s gnome painting, telling jokes and making new friends. Plus, it’s all free.
It’s all virtual to keep campers safe during the pandemic, and it’s for LGBTQ+ kids just like him.
“Everyone feels very safe, very welcome, and can be exactly who they are,” says the 17-year-old.
The “Stay-In” LGBTQ+ Youth Camp is being hosted by St. Petersburg nonprofit Metro Inclusive Health. Kids get a colorful box packed with activities, snacks and a shirt. Virtual “campfires” and “cabins” offer plenty of online chatter and bonding.
Program specialist Hannah Powell says for all the fun and games, the love and acceptance of the camp is the true magic.

The bacterial meningitis called meningococcal disease is officially being labeled as an outbreak in Florida. Metro Inclusive Health is teaming up with the health department ahead of the St. Pete Pride parade to give out free meningitis vaccines.
